As the word cannot Vedic Mathematics (VM) means mathematics in Vedas or mathematics from Vedas. One of the most successful attempts were made by Jagadguru Swamy Bharati Krishna Thirthaji Maharaj in this direction by constructing sixteen sutras and thirteen sub-sutras. It gives an excellent visualization of the thought of real numbers and is easily understood even by school children. It does not involve intricacies high-sounding logic of mathematics. One may call it Bhariti Krishna Thirthaji’s system of vedic mathematics, as it is the brainchild of Thirthaji. His work on mathematics is usually referred as (VM). It does not mean that these cannot be ‘VM’ other than that of Thirthaji. What we stress is that we are confining to the system work of Thirthaji.

Shri Thirthaji was Jagadguru Sankaracharya of Govardhana Peet Puri and was a scholoar of English and Sanskrit. He was an ardent lover of mathematics. He reconstructed sixteen sutras and thirteen sub-sutras in Sanskrit from the material scattered in the Athurva Veda. This does not mean that these sutras are present in the form in the Atherva Veda. It is heard from a reliable source that Thirthaji wrote sixteen volumes, one from each sutra – but the scripts are not traceable upto date. When Thirthaji confirmed the loss, he decided to rewrite these volumes again from his memory. In the mean time he was invited to visit USA by Self Realization Fellowship, Los Angels with a view to demonstrate VM to propagate the message of Vedanta – the cause of world peace and the base of unity of all religions, he accepted the invitation. As he decided to give demonstration on VM Thirthaji prepared the introduction account in English of his own reconstructed sutras entitled ‘VEDIC MATHEMATICS’. This account was written in the old age with his falling health and weak eyesight. The tape script of VM has taken by him to USA during his tour in 1958. His demonstrations in this work of VM were a grand success.

It was then planned to publish it in USA and he was to go to USA again for this work. The script was left in USA for further observation. After his return to India his health deterated and attained his Maha Samadhi in 1960. During his tour to USA he was attended by his devoted disciples – a Trivedi couple Mr. Chimani and Mrs. Manjula Devi who looked after Thirthaji with care. After the demise of Thirthaji, the publication of his VM was kept in abeyance. Ultimately the script was brought to India from USA through the efforts of Mrs. Manjula Devi on the advice of late Dr. C.D. Deshmook, ex-finance minister government of India. Through the sincere efforts of Mrs. Manjula Devi it got published from Banaras Hindu University in March 1965. It is widely known as VEDIC MATHEMATICS. It contains sixteen sutras and thirteen sub-sutras. By using those sutras one can calculate all fundamental operations like additions, subtractions, divisions, multiplications, fraction, decimals and algebraic operations quickly and easily.

On this novel Indian system of mathematics, pioneer work is being done in UK. The research includes application of vedic mathematics to trigonometry, three dimensional coordinate geometry, solutions of linear differential equations, matrices and determinants, logarithms and exponentials etc. Recently five books have been published in UK giving these details.
