Vedic Additions by SUDHA SUTRA

The process is the same as usual additions; but after every tenth place, putting a dot on the number where the sum exceeds ten drops out the tenth place. The addition is carried out column-by-column in the usual manner from bottom to top or top to bottom.

The step process is illustrated in the following examples:

  For   89.
   .

  69.
  48.
  8.6
--------
  292
--------
Step 1:
  • 6 + 8 = 14 which is more than 10. “Sudha” is said and a dot is put above 8. The tenth place units is dropped and only the number of the unit place (4) is carried forward. The unit place number ‘4’ is added to the next number.
  • 4 + 9 = 13 which is more that 10. So “Sudha” is said and a dot is put above 9. The tenth place unit is dropped out. The number of the unit place (3) is carried forward. The unit place number (3) is added to the next number.
  • 3 + 9= 12 which is more than 10. So “Sudha” is said and a dot is put above 9. The unit at tenth place is dropped and the number (2) at the unit place is the answer
Step-2
  • Before moving to the second column (tenth place) the dot due to “Sudhikarani” in the first column are counted (3) in this case. This is added to the lowest number 3 + 8 = 11. Again “Sudhikarani” is required. Say “Sudha” and put a dot above 8. The unit at tenth place is dropped and the number (1) at the unit place is carried forward. The unit place(1) is added to the next number.
  • 1 + 4 = 5. The result is adde3d to the next number 5 + 6 = 11. Again “Sudhikarani” is required. Say “Sudha” and put a dot above 6. The unit at the tenth place is dropped and the number (1) in the unit place is carried forward. The unit place number (1) is added to the next number1 + 8 = 9. No Sudhikarani process is required. Take9 as tenth place of the answer.
  • The number of dots due to “Sudhikarani” are counted (2) take this as hundreds place.
