EXAMPLES IN TEACH YOURSELF ARITHMETIC

Additions - Dot Method _ I - 3 OR MORE SINGLE DIGIT NUMBERS

If the number are more than 2, this method is quite interesting and very easy for young learners. This is also useful for mentally retarded children. We can also use this method for adult education programs. There are no restrictions for this method

HERE'S HOW TO PRACTICE IT

For some individuals the carrying part is difficult. To eliminate carrying part after every tenth place, the tenth place is dropped out by putting a dot on the number, where the sum exceeds to ten or equal to ten. The addition is carried out column by column in the usual manner from bottom to top or top to bottom.

For 7 + 8 + 6

11
7
14
+8
+6
21

Step 1: 6 + 8 = 14. Since it is more than 10, put a dot on 8 and the tens place 1 is dropped out and the units place 4 is carried forward
Step 2: The unit place 4 is added to the next number 7. We get 7 + 4 = 11. Since 11 is more than 10, put a dot on 7 and the tens Place 1 is dropped out and the units place 4 is carried forward
Step 3: Count the dots. We get 2. Take it as the tens place of the answer.Hence 7 + 8 + 6 = 21
